Each print is a double image. From across the room: a cat, two cats, a low red sun over the hills. Up close: a canal street of teahouses, a wooden shop house hung with curtains, a hillside of cube houses. All in sumi black, warm cream, sand and vermilion, with a soft woodblock grain.
The hidden-picture idea nods to the cat prints of Edo-period woodblock artists like Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who loved to hide one picture inside another. The Mountain Sunset Cats Trio takes the trick somewhere calmer: mist, mountains and the last light of the day, in a clean modern Japanese style.
